Do you want your infant to have a strong and successful smile and oral health? If so, there are things you need to do regularly to keep their little teeth and gums in the best shape possible. To help you know what to do, our dentist, Dr. Scott McQuiston, and our dental team have some helpful tips for you, which are:

First, clean your child’s mouth frequently. To start (when they don’t have little chompers yet), clean their gums with a clean, damp washcloth. It’s best to do so after each feeding. Once their teeth erupt into place, brush them twice a day with a soft-bristled child toothbrush and water (you don’t need to introduce toothpaste until they are 2 years old). If you need to, distract your child while you scrub their chompers to make the job a little easier.

Second, do your best to prevent baby bottle tooth decay. This is a dental issue that develops when the teeth are exposed to sugar and bacteria for long periods of time. When this happens, cavities form. This can occur when you send your child to bed with a bottle of milk or let your child continuously nurse while they sleep. It’s best to avoid doing these things as much as possible.
